Things to do when you’re feeling blue

I know. Derek Jeter broke his ankle, and you’re down in the dumps. Me too!So here are a few of the things I do to cheer myself up.

Take a walk or do something outside. Garden, stroll, climb a tree, go on a swing. It’s amazing how a little fresh air can blow the stink off.

Bake. It smells good…it tastes good…you can share what you made (or not). And there’s the satisfaction of doing something so homey just because.

Play with your pet. Once, I tied a string to a wadded up piece of tin foil and tied the other end to my belt loop. Then I ran around the house, causing the cat to chase the tinfoil ball. It’s hard to feel blue when you’re willfully doing something dopey. Sometimes I get down on the floor and pretend to be a dog, which utterly delights Willow.

Sing along with your favorite song. Loudly. “Tramps like us, baby we were born to run!” Yeah. It’s hard to feel that bad when you’re channeling the Boss or Aretha.

Rearrange a room. I don’t know anything about feng-shui, but when I rearrange a room, it feels great. Things are less cluttered, your old stuff looks new, and now you can sit and eat those cookies and reflect upon your hard work.

Hope you’re feeling more cheerful!
